Trail : South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge Lookout
Water on Trail: No
Bathrooms on Trail: Cedar Ridge Point
Going to a National Park on a free fee day can draw a lot of crowds, but we were surprised at how few people we saw. It was easy to find a parking spot, and the shuttle bus was not crowded at all!
First thing, we made our way over to the visitor center and checked out a few exhibits and double checked the trail conditions of the South Kaibab Trail. Things were a go!
The shuttle bus system is very easy to navigate. The Orange line takes you to the S. K and has two other lookout point stops along the way. The whole shuttle bus ride is very scenic with the Grand Canyon right out the window most of the way.
This hike is very, very, steep. I would seriously caution against any hike that goes into the canyon if you have bad knees, and are not properly prepared. The first part of the hike you go down some really intense switchbacks the levels out along a ridge that offers STUNNING views of the canyon. This part of the trail is very sunny so get out the sunscreen and start pounding the water.
After hiking along the ridge you head down a little more, and hit OH AH Point. My advice: Take a few pictures but keep on going down. OH AH point is nothing more than a small outcrop in the trail with way too many people in a small space... add in heights! ekkk! not for me!
Soon after, you will go down a very steep portion of the trail that will lead you to Cedar Ridge Point. This is a very large area with amazing views (always) plus bathrooms! We hiked out to a little point to eat our lunch and just took in all the wonder.
The hike out is tough, but keep going!
